Teach them young and watch them grow.

That has been my moto for years when it comes to personal finance, how else are they going to learn if we do not teach them and teach them young?

It is way too dangerous leaving something so important up to chance, imagine where you could be today if you had more financial knowledge back when you were a young adult?

This is such a passion of mine, teaching young adults how to set themselves up to be financial stable. I teamed up with local small business owner Jackie Newman from FIMA Finance and created a four-week program in finance for our local teens – Centisble Teen Talk or as its now referred to and hash tagged CTT.

Over the last four weeks we have taken 11 teenagers through everything from Budgeting, Loans, Affluenza, Banks accounts, Credit ratings, Insurance, superannuation, tech talks and setting goals. Picking topics to cover in this course was easy, we thought the hardest part was going to be keeping them engaged, but we were wrong!!

The teenagers were all so curious, they were interactive, they took it all on, we had some great discussion and by the time we were finished they had a very sound base knowledge of all topics covered. “We have learnt a lot of things that will keep us in good stead for the rest of our lives to help make sure that we are financially stable”, a closing comment from Jim Soumilas one of our older teens.

But it was not just the kids that enjoyed the course, the feedback from the parents was also positive, sometime teaching your own teenagers about these topics can be incredibly challenging. Finding the time and making sure they are fully engaged with you is difficult. We are not re-inventing the wheel; we are simply building on the work that you the parents are doing. “Thank – you, it has been wonderful to hear each week what you have taught the teens”.

Like I said none of this is rocket science, but a lot of it is now being missed in our society, unfortunately its all about what these young valuable minds are seeing in places like social media, but we as adults know not everything you see is reality. But these teens have now chosen not to fall into the marketing ploys about having it all, they are on track to create a sustainable life based on their means., their budgeting and their goals.

Our program has been such a success with these 11 teenagers that the buzz around the community has been incredible, so mush so that the local high school has invited us to present our program in the school.

I now have a new goal in mind after being so inspired up by these teens and watching them really understand the basics of what it takes to create financial stability – along with Jackie, to take this course to as many teens as we possible can, through virtual events, community programs and now of course to as many high schools as we can!
