Leadership – What it takes

Being a leader in this day and age is hard work! Throw in the global pandemic and its even harder.

Knowing how to lead well is a fine skill in the business world and for those that get it right excel their businesses beyond all expectation.

I am a natural born leader and when I am asked what it takes to be a leader, I am very clear in my response. You must have a vision and a clear path to get there. Without a vision of where you are taking your business how are you planning on leading it there?

The greatest example I use is of two ships leaving a harbour, one has a captain with a destination and route to take, the other is uncaptioned. Which ship do you think is going to arrive at the destination? The one that has the captain with a plan.

Then how do you then get the people that you are leader to follow? Again, this is simple, you include them. You tell them where the business is going, you explain the plan and their role within the plan. Once people understand and feel like they are apart of the future of the business and will share in the success they will be easy to lead because they want to be involved.

Leading is not for everyone though, it can be extremely hard and challenging because you are often pushing people marginally out of their comfort zones to get the best out of them. You are the one that must solve all the problems that arise and when you are captioning that ship, and there are always going to be problems. You also must be a very decisive decision maker. But its all in the way that you do this. I am one for including the whole team for discussion, many minds are greater than one, there is never a stupid question or comment and looking outside the box is always preferred.

Apart of being a leader is knowing what you are looking for to help you achieve what you set out to achieve. A way to I do this in employing people is looking at their hobbies and not on their education, why, because people’s hobbies often tell me how people think, and this is far more insightful than a list of degrees.

Having creativity as a leader is a must. Doing the “same old – same old” is never going to work, when you look at our great leaders of the world today, they are dedicated to themselves, they don’t try and fit into the mould of what other believe a leader should do or look like or how they should lead.  They just Lead!
